When temperatures are expected to be in the lower to mid 30s in San Francisco Bay area, make sure your tender plants are ready.
All SummerWinds Nursery carry Wilt-stop Plant Protector and Easy Gardener Plant Protecting Blankets during the winter season.
A combination of Wilt-stop and a frost protection blanket is advised to most limit damage.
Pay attention to sub-tropical plants (hibiscus, bougainvillea, canna and some jasmine).
They are the most susceptible to damaged if not protected. |
At a minimum, you should water all of your plants.
A well hydrated plant is less likely to suffer from cold damage.
|
Additional steps to take:
• Move potted plants to a sheltered location under the eaves, on the
porch, in the garage, shed, etc.
• If you have time, you can construct a light frame and cover it with plastic (make sure
it doesn't touch the plant) or even an old quilt or blanket.
• For trees like citrus that are hard to cover, try stringing Christmas lights in them. The
heat will help offset a freeze for most of our winter freezing temperatures.
• Winter root crops should be OK. In fact, some say that a touch of frost sweetens carrots.
